Finding love in the studio! Fans recognized the chemistry between Avril Lavigne and Mod Sun as soon as they heard their joint single.
Avril Lavigne hinted at a new album with Mod Sun, Travis Barker, and others around December 2020. The song “Flames,” which appeared on Mod Sun’s album Internet Killed the Rockstar, was released a month later by Lavigne and the rapper.
At the time, an insider revealed exclusively to Us Weekly that the two had been “seeing each other” after becoming friends over their shared love of music. Afterward, Mod Sun disclosed that they had met through mutual acquaintance Machine Gun Kelly.
During an interview with Metro in February 2021, the Minnesota native said he was “starstruck” when the Grammy Award nominee expressed an interest in his music. When I told her that Avril Lavigne said she liked my song, she said, ‘I really like your music.’ And she said to send me some other stuff you’re working on.’ It’s hard to explain because it’s f–king Avril Lavigne.”
The “Complicated” singer ended up being Mod Sun’s only collaborator on the record, despite his initial trepidation about asking her to work with him.

According to the Canadian-born Mod Sun’s own admission, she tried to reject their initial bond because of her previous relationships. From 2006 to 2010, Lavigne was married to Deryck Whibley. From 2013 to 2015, she was married to Chad Kroeger.

In an interview with Kelly Clarkson on The Kelly Clarkson Show, Avril Lavigne talked about how she and Mod Sun became friends.
