CBI 5 opens with a flashback of Balagopal (Renji Panicker), a CBI official, telling a group of IPS trainees about one of the most perplexing cases in which even the CBI was stumped at one point.

The case begins with the death of a minister named Samad on a flight, followed by a string of killings involving people connected to the minister.

Sethurama Iyer is tasked with investigating this high-profile case at that time. There are numerous diversions, suspects, and subplots that naturally fit into the story, ranging from a terrorist connection to a personal grudge, corrupt police officers, an extramarital affair, and a criminal who exploits cutting-edge technology.

The mention to assassinations in the Gandhi family was the most fascinating aspect of the film. Vikram, played by Jagathy Sreekumar, who has appeared in previous CBI films, was used convincingly, which was yet another highlight of the film.

It was gratifying to see Jagathy, the great Malayalam actor who has been handicapped for years due to a tragic road accident, utilised in the film at a vital point with a clear purpose.

The fifth edition of the popular CBI franchise, CBI 5 The Brain, was released on May 1, Sunday. Mammootty, the Malayalam megastar, is reprising his role as Sethurama Iyer in CBI 5 The Brain, which marks senior filmmaker K Madhu’s comeback.

The Mammootty starrer is maintaining its steady run after completing the first four days of release.

CBI 5 The Brain has crossed the 10-crore mark at the Kerala box office, according to trade experts, after four days of release. The Mammootty starrer is approaching the 12-Crore threshold in terms of global box office.

When compared to the Kerala box office, the investigation thriller is performing best in abroad centres.

According to sources, CBI 5 The Brain grossed Rs. 8.7 crore in its first three days of release, with a share of Rs. 3.23 crore. Given that the Mammootty film didn’t have a full-fledged first-weekend surge, it’s an excellent box office figure.

In addition, the crime thriller has yet to have a wide release in other Indian states. If things continue to go as planned, CBI 5 The Brain will have a terrific second weekend, with more screenings across the country. The SN Swamy-scripted Mammootty starrer was released in theatres over 35 years after the first instalment, Oru CBI Diarykurippu.

As a result, the CBI franchise has become the longest-running Indian film franchise, with the same main man, director, and writer. Along with Mammootty, the original CBI cast, which includes Jagathy Sreekumar, Mukesh, and Saikumar, has returned for CBI 5 The Brain.

Mammootty’s Sethurama Iyer is back, and much like before, he is gentle, nuanced, sharp, and smooth when it comes to examining a case from the ground up. CBI 5 The Brain, directed by K Madhu and written by SN Swami, is the fifth instalment in the CBI franchise, and it features everything a Sethurama Iyer fan, and thriller enthusiasts in general, could want.

When Malayalam cinema delves deeper into the investigative thriller genre, SN Swami deserves praise for once again producing a storyline that keeps the audience captivated until the end. Mammootty also retains the charm and composure required for the legendary character of Sethurama Iyer for the fifth time. This is a remarkable achievement in and of itself.

As Sethurama Iyer, Mammootty was unflappable. In theatres, some of his austere emotions were enough to make an impression. Sai Kumar continued where he left off in the third instalment of CBI, evoking the late actor Sukumaran’s mannerisms.

Renji Panicker, unlike Mukesh’s character Chacko or Jagathy’s Vikram, was unable to establish a relationship. His role was, at best, ancillary. Jagathy, on the other hand, was fantastic in his role. The director deserves appreciation for how he utilised the legendary comedian.

The tale has some unknown connections, particularly the deceased minister’s vanished personal staff and the terrorist link suggested in the first part. The latter half of the second half appears to be crammed with too much material in a short amount of time; a rushed, half-hearted attempt to tie up loose ends that can leave the spectator in the dark.

However, there is some good news for die-hard devotees. The makers have already hinted about a sixth instalment in the popular franchise.
