How does the FIFA World Cup 2022 Draw Work?

The FIFA World Cup Draw might be bewildering for anyone who isn’t familiar of the format. We’ll do our best to make it as simple as possible. Using the FIFA World Rankings, the 32 eligible teams are initially divided into four pots of eight.

After that, eight teams are selected from each Pot and placed in groups of three. Pot 1 is emptied first, followed by Pot 2, then Pot 3, and so on. You will witness a ball selected from the team Pot which will be then distributed to one of the eight groups from A to H.

Regulations for the Draw

FIFA adheres to the following rules when assigning teams to groups from pots:

The top seven teams in the world, including this year’s host nation of Qatar, are all placed in Pot 1. Unlike other nations represented by a different color ball, Qatar will be placed in the A1 position according to FIFA’s guidelines.

After that, the remaining seven top seeds are drawn into Groups B through H. As a rule, no more than one side from each qualification zone may be included in a single group in FIFA competitions. That’s why you rarely find nearby nations competing in group stage matches.

This regulation does not apply to Europe, which has 13 teams and may see many teams from the UEFA qualifiers face each other. A minimum of one and a maximum of two European teams must be represented in each group.

Teams from the AFC and CONMEBOL will meet in the 2022 Intercontinental Playoffs, while the CONCACAF and OFC will face off. After that, the whole match schedule for the FIFA World Cup 2022 will be available.
