Childhood and Education

Collins was born to a Welsh mother named Mary and an English and Flemish-born father at Hackney South East Hospital in Hackney, east London. Her Flemish grandpa was an immigrant to the UK in 1915 at the age of five. He was originally from Antwerp, Belgium. Her mother Mary raised her and her older sister Vicki in Highbury, London. Collins’ mother returned to school to finish her law degree when she was 14 years old. Collins traveled to Romania in the 1970s with the youth club Woodcraft Folk, of which he was a member.

She had her training at the Cockpit Youth Theatre and Royal Court Activists beginning at the age of 14, as well as Kingsway Princeton College, where she completed her O/A-level theatre and drama studies.

Following her exams, Collins was cast in Lou Stein’s production of Mikhail Bulgakov’s The Crimson Island at the Gate Theatre. After appearing in the 1978 video for the Squeeze song “Cool For Cats,” her career took a different turn.
