Jersey Box Office Collection: The Film Had Grossed Total Worldwide Gross of 27.12 Crore!

Jersey is a 2022 Hindi-language sports drama film written and directed by Gowtam Tinnanuri, and is a remake of his 2019 Telugu film of the same name. ReelSports’ Rob Miller directed and choreographed the cricket action.

The film was officially announced in October of this year.

Despite delays caused by the COVID-19 epidemic, principal photography began in Chandigarh in December 2019 and concluded in December 2020.

Jersey was supposed to be released in theatres on August 28, 2020, however owing to the COVID-19 epidemic, it was pushed back several times. On April 22, 2022, the picture premiered in theatres.

Despite strong reviews from reviewers and appreciation for Shahid Kapoor’s performance, Jersey had a disappointing box office success.

Storyline

JERSEY tells the story of a common man with lofty ambitions. Arjun Talwar (Shahid Kapoor) is a brilliant Chandigarh cricketer in 1986. Vidya is the love of his life (Mrunal Thakur). Vidya’s father is against their relationship, so they elope and marry. Arjun is unable to make the Punjab Ranji team. Coach Bali (Pankaj Kapur), Arjun’s coach and mentor, advises him to try next year. Arjun, on the other hand, has decided to go.

He gets a government job and moves in with Vidya to a government quarter. Vidya has a son, Ketan aka Kittu (Ronit Kamra). Talwars’ life are not going well in 1996. Arjun has been placed on leave due to allegations of corruption.

To reclaim his employment, he was advised to pay a bribe of Rs. 50,000 to a lawyer. Arjun, on the other hand, refuses to do so. Vidya’s profession as a chef at a five-star hotel keeps their kitchen operating. She is dissatisfied because she believes Arjun is wasting his life. Kittu, on the other hand, has begun cricket coaching.

He asks Arjun to get him a team India shirt one day. Arjun promises to buy him one for his birthday, which is coming up in a few days. However, Arjun discovers that the jersey costs Rs. 500, putting it out of his price range.

He tries to borrow money from his pals, but his efforts are in vain. Vidya refuses to give him the money since she believes she needs to save for far more essential things. Meanwhile, Coach Bali informs Arjun that Punjab and New Zealand will compete in a charity match.

A batsman is needed for the Punjab team. Arjun decides to play the match, especially because each player would receive Rs. 1,000. The rest of the movie revolves around what occurs next.

Jersey grossed 3.75 crore in its first day at the domestic box office. The film grossed Rs. 5.50 crore on its second day. The film grossed $5.50 crore on its third day, bringing the domestic weekend total to $14.75 crore.

The film had grossed 22.65 crore in India and 4.47 crore abroad as of 7 May 2022, with a total worldwide gross of 27.12 crore.

Despite good critical reviews, Jersey did poorly at the box office.

According to Ganesh Aaglave of Firstpost, the film’s failure was due to a box office clash with K.G.F: Chapter 2, Shahid Kapoor’s overabundance of South Indian remakes, the free availability of the Hindi dubbed version of the original film on YouTube, and average music compared to his previous film Kabir Singh (2019).

Review

JERSEY opens with a fascinating scene set in modern-day Bengaluru. The first half switches back and forth between the 1986 and 1996 tracks. Arjun hitting the player who taunts Vidya and Arjun administering cream to Vidya’s hands are two scenarios that stick out here.

The sequences in which Arjun slaps Kittu and then is slapped by Vidya are quite touching. The charity match segment, as well as the interval point, are thrilling. The scene after the intermission, when Arjun goes to the railway station merely to roar in delight, is too amazing. Vidya’s request for Arjun to fly instead of taking the train is adorable. The final match is exhilarating. The ending comes as a shock.

Despite being a bit clichéd, Gowtam Tinnanuri’s narrative is poignant. At times, Gowtam Tinnanuri’s screenplay is effective. A couple scenes are very well-written.

However, for more effect, the writer should have cut the length of some sections. The dialogues between Siddharth and Garima are average, with a few one-liners that stick out. However, there was far too much Punjabi utilised, which could have been avoided.

JERSEY is carried on the broad shoulders of Shahid Kapoor. The actor has given his all and has immersed himself in the role. His eyes speak for themselves in various scenes, and it must be seen to be believed. JERSEY demonstrates that Shahid is one of India’s top actors right now.

Mrunal Thakur’s character is underdeveloped. She, on the other hand, does a fantastic job. Ronit Kamra is a sweetheart. Pankaj Kapur is a talented actor who has a terrific rapport with Shahid. However, his climactic dialogues are difficult to follow.

Jasleen Shergill’s Geetika Mehandru (Jasleen Shergill) is charming and gives a confident performance. Rituraj Singh (Mahesh sir) is a trustworthy person. As Arjun’s sidekick, Anjum Batra (Amrit) does a good job. Ravinder and grownup Kittu are played by decent actors.

The music of Sachet & Parampara is mediocre. ‘Mehram’ has an enthralling quality to it and distinguishes out. The remaining songs, such as ‘Maiyya Mainu,’ ‘Baliye Re,’ and ‘Jind Meriye,’ are unremarkable. The graphics are what make ‘Baliye Re’ work. The adrenaline surge is provided by Anirudh Ravichander’s background score.

JERSEY’s overall success is due to Shahid Kapoor’s superb performance, the emotional moments, and the heartwarming conclusion. JERSEY’s box office chances will be limited to multiplexes and metros because to its slow pace, extended length, and competition from KGF – CHAPTER 2 in single screens.
