Samrat Prithviraj is a historical action drama film directed by Chandraprakash Dwivedi and produced by Yash Raj Films that was released in India in 2022. Prithviraj Raso is a Braj language epic poem on the life of Prithviraj Chauhan, a Chahamana dynasty king. It stars Akshay Kumar as Prithviraj Chauhan and Manushi Chhillar as Sanyogita.
Yash Raj Films published an official motion poster for the film on September 9, 2019, confirming that it will be shown in theatres on Diwali 2020. Principal photography began on November 15, 2019, in Jaipur, but was halted in March 2020 because to the COVID-19 outbreak in India, forcing the film to be postponed indefinitely.
The film’s production resumed at YRF Studios in October 2020. After a legal battle a week before its intended premiere, the film was renamed Samrat Prithviraj. On June 3, 2022, the film was released in 2D and IMAX formats.

Story:
Samrat Prithviraj begins in a gladiator-like scene in Ghazi, Afghanistan, with a feeble, blinded Samrat Prithviraj (Akshay Kumar) displaying his valor by locking horns with fearsome lions. Spectators, including Sultan Mohammad Ghori (Manav Vij), hold their breath as they watch this exhibition of sheer manhood and bravado.
After then, the period drama hits the rewind button and takes us through some of Samrat Prithviraj’s life chapters. From the First Battle of Tahrain, when he had his rival Mohammad Ghori at his feet, to how this ‘last Hindu monarch’ had to suffer defeat and, finally, death as a result of a betrayal.
Prithviraj has to cope with his future father-in-law Jaychand (Ashutosh Rana) in order to marry his daughter Sanyogita (Manushi Chhillar), who is head over heels in love with him.

Box Office Collection:
Critics were divided on the picture. It was made on a reported budget of between Rs. 150 crore (US$20 million) and Rs. 300 crore (US$39 million), and as of 9 June 2022, it had a worldwide gross collection of Rs. 68.49 crore (US$9.0 million). Early on, earnings did not reach expectations. This, combined with performance cancellations owing to low attendance, resulted in a downward trend for the movie.

Review:
“According to folklore, the tale of Samrat Prithviraj has been depicted in several different variants by different authors. Doctor Sahab takes the most divisive course, telling the story of Prithviraj Raso, a version that many historians believe is false. However, we can’t tell which version of the narrative is the actual one because we can’t date them precisely. So, consider the film as yet another Doctor Sahab rendition of Prithviraj Raso, with one twist at the end.”
Fans of Akshay Kumar shouldn’t be discouraged, as the actor will soon return to the big screen in Aanand L Rai’s Raksha Bandhan. The film, which also stars Bhumi Pednekar, will premiere at the same festival.
