Top Gun: Maverick is a film directed by Joseph Kosinski and written by Ehren Kruger, Eric Warren Singer, and Christopher McQuarrie, based on a scenario by Peter Craig and Justin Marks. The film stars Tom Cruise as Captain Pete “Maverick” Mitchell, a test pilot, alongside Miles Teller, Jennifer Connelly, Jon Hamm, Glen Powell, Lewis Pullman, Ed Harris, Monica Barbaro, and Val Kilmer, and is the sequel to the 1986 blockbuster Top Gun.

The film recounts Maverick’s return to the United States Navy Strike Fighter Tactics Instructor program (commonly known as “Top Gun”), where he is forced to confront his past while training a group of younger fighter pilots, one of whom is the son of Maverick’s best buddy Goose.

Paramount Pictures revealed in 2010 that a sequel to Top Gun was in the works. Cruise and Kilmer, as well as producer Jerry Bruckheimer and director Tony Scott, were recruited to reprise their roles from the first film. Craig and Marks completed a draught of the screenplay in mid-2012, Scott committed suicide, and the film’s pre-production was placed on hold.

Kosinski was hired in June 2017 and rewrote the script. Principal photography took conducted in California, Washington, D.C., and Maryland between May 2018 and April 2019. The movie was shot with 6K-screen cameras that were certified by IMAX. Its release date was originally set for July 12, 2019, but was postponed due to difficulties shooting multiple intricate action sequences, as well as the COVID-19 epidemic and scheduling complications.

Top Gun: Maverick had its world premiere at CinemaCon on April 28, 2022, and was released in IMAX, 4DX, ScreenX, and Dolby Cinema in the United States on May 27, 2022. Critics lauded the film, with many finding it superior to the original.

What is the story of Top Gun: Maverick?

Vice Admiral Beau “Cyclone” Simpson and Rear Admiral Solomon “Warlock” Bates have gathered an elite cadre of F/A-18E/F Super Hornet aviators—all Top Gun graduates—for an urgent mission: strike a renegade nation’s uranium enrichment facility (unnamed in the film).

The facility is located in a steep depression at the end of a mountainous canyon and is defended by surface-to-air missile (SAM) batteries and an airbase with Su-57 fifth-generation fighters; reaching the facility requires a risky high-speed nap-of-the-earth approach in the canyon under hostile radar coverage, pushing the F/A-18E/F beyond its NATOPS limits. Due to the lack of the modern F-35C, Maverick suggests using four F/A-18E/Fs in two pairs to attack the facility’s entrance and later the facility itself.

The pilots initially reject Maverick, particularly Lieutenant Jake “Hangman” Seresin and Lieutenant Bradley “Rooster” Bradshaw, the son of Maverick’s late best friend and RIO Nick “Goose” Bradshaw. Maverick, Rooster feels, obstructed his candidacy to the Naval Academy, and he resents him for delaying his career.

The pilots are prepared for all parts of the task, including basic fighter maneuvers, precision-guided munitions use, nap-of-the-earth flying, and the significance of teamwork. The pilots also learn of Rooster’s father’s relationship with Maverick, which causes tension between Hangman and Rooster over the former’s reckless attitude toward his wingmen and the latter’s cautious flying, which Hangman blames on his father’s death. The pilots begin to reassess Maverick’s abilities as they observe him, and their squad comes together.

During the training, Maverick re-unites with Penny, who offers him advice and support, especially in light of his protective attitude toward Rooster. Iceman, whose throat cancer forces him to communicate by typing his words on a computer, manages to verbally emphasize the mission’s importance. Days later, Iceman passes away, and Maverick and the pilots attend his burial, where he is remembered with a missing man formation.

Tom Cruise’s Top Gun Maverick is expected to be the actor’s largest career-starter, with a budget of $100 million.

According to a Collider story, Tom Cruise’s Top Gun Maverick is likely to have a huge opening weekend. Given the four-day Memorial Day weekend, the film is expected to gross at least $92 million, with others speculating that it could gross up to $125 million.

If the $125 million figure is correct, Top Gun Maverick might be Cruise’s most expensive opening in his four-decade career. In fact, if this happens, Top Gun 2 might outperform Steven Speilberg’s sci-fi adventure thriller War of the Worlds, which was the superstar’s largest opener to date. In 2005, War of the Worlds grossed a whopping $65 million.

So far, the reviews have been positive, with Rotten Tomatoes giving it a 97 percent rating. “Top Gun: Maverick pulls off a feat even more difficult than a 4G inverted dive,” says the critical consensus, “delivering a long-belated sequel that surpasses its predecessor in an outrageously entertaining manner.”
