Vikram Box Office Collection Worldwide: In Just Seven Days, the Film Earned 250 Crores (us$33 Million) Globally!.

Lokesh Kanagaraj wrote and directed Vikram, which was produced by Raaj Kamal Films International in 2022.

The film follows a black-ops team led by Amar as they search down masked vigilantes while learning about a narcotics ring led by Santhanam who wants the missing drugs delivered to his cold-blooded boss Rolex.

The movie is a spiritual sequel to Hassan’s 1986 film of the same name. A remixed version of the 1986 film’s theme tune is also used in the movie. After Kaithi, Vikram is the second film in Lokesh’s projected Cinematic Universe (LCU).

Filming in Tamil Nadu, including Karaikudi, Chennai, Pondicherry, and Coimbatore, began in July 2021 and concluded in February 2022. On June 3, 2022, Vikram was released in theatres, and it received generally excellent reviews.

Storyline

  • In Vikram, Lokesh Kanagaraj combines the espionage-filled world of Kamal Haasan’s 1986 film Vikram with his own 2019 film Kaithi’s action-filled world of drug lords and cops. It has some of the secrets of a spy picture and some of the thrills of an action film, but it isn’t entirely satisfying and fails to offer the adrenaline rush that a film with such lofty goals promises.
  • When Karnan (Kamal Haasan), the father of a martyred cop Prapanchan (Kalidas Jayaram), is assassinated, the film begins off intriguingly. We find that a succession of such deaths had occurred, with a group of masked individuals claiming responsibility and declaring their war on the establishment.
  • Jose (Chemban Vinod Jose), the police chief, calls in a black ops squad led by Amar (Fahadh Faasil), who begins probing into Karnan’s life. Santhanam (Vijay Sethupathi), a formidable drug lord with a huge family who is looking for a shipment of raw material that may make him a kingpin, is the main suspect.

  • Meanwhile, Amar is perplexed by the several Karnas. Was he an alcoholic parent grieving the death of his son, a womanizer, or something else entirely? Is he alive or dead?
When we witness Amar and his team trying to make sense of the murders and track down the murderers, Vikram is at his best. Even though we see very little of Kamal Haasan in these scenes, we are aware of his presence, both as a character and as an actor.
  • From Nayakan to Anbe Sivam, there are references to Kamal’s work, and recognizing them provides some tiny thrills. The actor, who is in action-star mode here, also has a laugh-out-loud moment, which leads to the intermission. And Vijay Sethupathi appears to be continuing his role as a merciless villain from Master.
  • However, after the easy-to-guess mystery around Karnan is solved, the story becomes relatively straightforward. A tiny group of cops should be able to hold off a gangster army. It’s comparable to what we had in Kaithi, but it’s not as effective here.
  • To his credit, Lokesh tries to offer an emotional undertone with a subplot concerning Karnan and Prapanchan’s baby, but it falls flat. Amar and Sandhanam’s arcs, too, become predictable. Fahadh Faasil’s Amar is largely written off, while Vijay Sethupathi comes across as overly earnest.
  • Narain, who plays Bejoy, the good cop from Kaithi, is also getting the short end of the stick. Even Suriya’s much-hyped cameo, which serves as a set-up for the next movie in the ‘Lokesh Kanagaraj Universe,’ falls flat.

Review

Vikram, a forthcoming emotional action thriller starring Kamal Haasan and set to hit theatres on June 3, 2022, is titled after a 1986 Kamal Haasan film. Despite the fact that the picture is only a few days away from hitting theatres, the plot/storyline of Vikram, which is a spiritual sequel/spin-off to its 1986 predecessor, remains largely unknown.

However, we were able to piece together bits and pieces of the proven plot and provide it here. In his own words, Kamal Haasan describes Vikram as a ‘Quentin-Tarantino-ish’ film in the search of the protagonist’s plot. Kamal Haasan has also stated that the concept for this film was originally conceived for the 1986 Vikram film. But, because of its unpredictability and lack of melodies, his concept was dismissed 36 years ago as “too maverick.”

Lokesh Kanagaraj, who was blown away by Kamal Haasan’s idea, which he described as “way ahead of its time,” expressed interest in directing it and has added his own twist by incorporating his usual mix of a one-night-story, a multi-starrer, non-linear narration, crime backdrop, drugs, no-strong female characters, and characters who inadvertently rise to the occasion.

Fahadh Faasil is also supposed to play Amar, a cop who feels a couple of murder cases are serial killings, and his inquiry leads to a conflict between the parties involved in the case. The story also stars Vijay Sethupathi as a criminal, Narain as a retired cop, and Kamal Haasan as a retired and probably blind cop [unconfirmed].
