The sequel reunites the previous film’s production staff, however, it was mostly directed by Tsui Hark from the first film. Wu Jing, Jackson Yee, and the rest of the main cast are also set to return. The film was shot with IMAX-certified cameras and will be released in a high-definition format.

The story of Chinese People’s Volunteers soldiers fighting in frigid temperatures during the Korean War continues in this film. The picture grossed $241 million in three days and $351 million in five days, outperforming the original in both categories. The film grossed $398 million USD during the first week of the Chinese New Year holidays, with 981 million CNY ($154 million USD) from its opening weekend.

The Battle at Lake Changjin II’s average ticket price on its first two days in cinemas was between US$9.00 and $10.00, which was lower than the average ticket price for rival films Snipers and Dunk for Future, probably because it was more widely exhibited in lower-tier locations with lower ticket costs.

After the first weekend, gross revenues began to decline, falling from $288 million CNY ($45 million USD) on Sunday to $189 million CNY ($29.7 million USD) on the first Monday.

On Chinese aggregator sites Douban and Maoyan, the film received 7.2 out of 10 and 9.6 out of 10 ratings, respectively, compared to 7.4 and 9.5 for its predecessor.

Forbes’ Scott Mendelson described the film as a “just action” movie that was patriotic but “not exactly nationalistic or excessively jingoistic.”
