Warren Kenneth Paxton Jr. (born December 23, 1962) is an attorney and politician who has been the Attorney General of Texas since January 2015. Paxton is a Tea Party conservative, according to his website. In 2018, Attorney General Paxton was re-elected to a second term. He previously served in the Texas State Senate and the Texas House of Representatives, representing the 8th and 70th districts, respectively.

In 2022, Paxton will seek re-election. Paxton won his party’s nomination on May 24, defeating George P. Bush 68 percent to 32 percent, advancing to the November 2022 general election.

Since 2015, Paxton has been charged with state securities fraud for conduct that occurred before he became governor. He has entered a plea of not guilty to the charges. Paxton’s office was accused of “bribery, abuse of office, and other offenses” by multiple high-ranking subordinates in October 2020.

After Joe Biden won the 2020 presidential election and Donald Trump refused to concede while falsely claiming election fraud, Paxton aided Trump in his efforts to overturn the result, from filing the unsuccessful Texas v. Pennsylvania case in the Supreme Court to speaking at a rally Trump held on January 6, 2021, just before the 2021 United States Capitol attack.
