Will there be Another 6 Underground? Check Release Date & Cast

Netflix’s film chief Scott Stuber stated that the action-comedy 6 Underground, starring Ryan Reynolds, will not be getting a sequel.

The film, directed by Michael Bay and set for release in December 2019, follows a team of highly trained spies tasked with erasing their pasts, going entirely off-grid, and coming together to save the world. The production cost, according to reports, was $150 million.

However, even with its impressive ensemble of actors – including Reynolds, Corey Hawkins from In The Heights, Adria Arjona from Triple Frontier, Ben Hardy from EastEnders, Melanie Laurent from Oxygen, Manuel Garcia-Rulfo from The Magnificent Seven – as well as a respectable audience, the film was met with harsh criticism, and as a result, Netflix decided not to produce a sequel.

Stuber told Variety recently that “we didn’t feel like we got there on that one conceptually.” Even though the song was well-received, we didn’t feel we hit the mark well enough to warrant a return. Those characters and their world just didn’t hold my heart.”

Netflix is now working on sequels to Will Smith’s Bright 2, Charlize Theron’s The Old Guard, and Marvel’s Chris Hemsworth’s Extraction.

When Was The Release Date For 6 Underground?

On December 13, 2019, Netflix released 6 Underground digitally and in select theatres. This is a departure for someone like Michael Bay, who has had such a long history of success with his mega-franchises like Transformers, Bad Boys, and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.

What is the cast of 6 Underground made up of?

Actors from all across the world are included in the film. Ryan Reynolds, star of Deadpool, Green Lantern, and The Internet, is leading the charge. He portrays the film’s central antagonist, One, the head of the underground team (more on them later). Melanie Laurent, best known for her role as Shoshanna in Quentin Tarantino’s Inglourious Basterds, is also in the cast. Two is the name of her character. In From Dusk Til Dawn: The Series, Manuel Garcia-Rulfo portrays the role of Three. Among the cast members who will be familiar to Good Omens fans is Adria Arjona, best known for her role as Anathema Device actor. Straight Outta Compton star Corey Hawkins takes on the role of Five. As Six, Ben Hardy of Bohemian Rhapsody and X-Men: Apocalypse fame completes the titular 6 Underground.

Dave Franco and Peter Stormare are also featured in the film.

WHAT IS THE PLOT OF 6 UNDERGROUND?

An anonymous vigilante squad is formed by a billionaire benefactor who fakes his death in order to hunt down criminals and terrorists that the rest of the world is either unable or unwilling to pursue. In the hypothetical Asian nation of Turkistan, Reynolds’ “One” leads and organizes the group, which aims to overthrow the terrible dictatorship of the imaginary Asian nation.

WHAT DID CRITICS HAVE TO SAY ABOUT 6 UNDERGROUND?

Rotten Tomatoes gives 6 Underground a score of 36%, while Metacritic gives it a grade of 41%. Overall, the reviews were quite divisive. The high-octane action sequences and Reynolds’ performance were praised. In spite of this, the picture was criticized for its length, which clocks in at more than two hours.

Unfortunately, the titular group’s activities have come to an end. Netflix had planned to use 6 Underground to launch a series for the streaming service, but that plan has now been scrapped. And the viewership figures corroborated this, with an estimated 83 million people tuning in over its opening weekend. But Netflix was put off by following bad reviews, which made them reconsider. “We didn’t feel like we got there creatively,” Netflix’s film boss Scott Stuber stated in July 2021 when he announced that Netflix will not be making a sequel to 6 Underground. Even though the song was a hit, we didn’t feel like we nailed the mark well enough to return.
