During the seven days following the 94th Academy Awards and Will Smith’s unexpected slap of Chris Rock in the face, things have moved rapidly.
In the wake of Smith’s resignation from the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, the Academy has launched disciplinary proceedings against him.
Despite Smith’s resignation, this issue is far from over, and Willow Smith, 21, has gone philosophical with some cryptic social media comments.
Willow Pinkett Smith and her mother, Jada Pinkett Smith, co-host Red Table Talk, Willow tweeted within a minute of each other on Saturday: “The meaning of life is revealed in hardship” and “Life is a series of reactions”.
Willow hasn’t tweeted anything new since we last checked up on her.
On Friday, Smith resigned from the Academy after the incident.
The Academy has yet to make a decision on whether or not to take action against him for punching Rock over a joke about Jada Pinkett Smith.
That decision to impose those disciplinary measures will be made by the Academy on April 18th.
After replying immediately to the Academy’s notice of a disciplinary hearing, I am prepared to accept any and all repercussions for my acts,” I wrote in my response.
In no way, shape, or form can I justify my conduct at the 94th Academy Awards.
Just a handful of the people I’ve injured include Chris’s family and many of my closest friends and loved ones, the audience, and worldwide audiences around the world.
His resignation was described in detail in a letter he sent.
“I betrayed the Academy’s trust,” he said. The nominations and awards of others for their exceptional efforts were snatched away from them because of my ineptitude.
Grieving at the death of a close confidant has left me brokenhearted. It is my hope that the Academy will be able to get back to doing what it does best: fostering creativity and artistic expression in the film industry.
The Academy’s Board of Governors has found me guilty of misconduct, hence I am voluntarily quitting my membership in the organization.
The problem of violence overriding reason cannot be solved overnight, but I am prepared to put in the time and effort necessary to change.”
